About Us

Colfax Township was organized in 1869, holding it's first election on April 5, 1869, electing it's first Supervisor OC Benton, Clerk AS Perring and Treasurer Anson Freeman.

Mr. Freeman also has the distinction of being the first Colfax Settler, homesteading 160 acres, building in October 1863 the first house in the township.  In January, 1864 he brought his family to their new home.  To access the house, Freeman had to cut a road 8 miles through the woods and build a bridge across 'a good size creek'.

Following Mr. Freeman to the township were Calvin Woodworth (1864), LM Keyes and R. Jewell (1866), Allen and Willard Draggoo and Moses Bolton (1867), Stephen A. Blanchard (1870).  Other early settlers were Wm. Hoskiss, GC Benton,

AH Perring, S. Rackliff, JB Winans and Fayette Walker.

The first order of business was to erect a school.  One was quickly built and as soon as the roof was on the building (and no floor yet laid), Miss Axie Jewell, who later married AH Freeman, welcomed the first group of students as their teacher.

Currently, Colfax Township is home to 446 people (2020 US Census); however, there are many 'weekenders' who value the beauty of our rural setting.   Our township government continues to be made up of a Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and 2 Trustees, who are elected to serve a 4 year term.  Our educational tax dollars go to support Walkerville Public School, home of the Wildcats.
